Workshop : Introduction to Radio Art with Sarah Washington & Knut


Radio Art offers the freedom to experiment with the form and content

of radio in an artistic manner. In this workshop by radio artists

Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann the participants sharpen their

ears and learn the skills to produce a show for Luxembourg's Radio ARA

that will be broadcast around the world as their contribution to the

international radio art network Radia.

The workshop is hosted by Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann (Mobile



biographies : Sarah Washington is an artist/activist working in

experimental music and radio art. She co-created the London radio

station Resonance FM and the radio art network Radia. She performs

with self-built electronic instruments in the duo Tonic Train with

Knut Aufermann. Together they began Mobile Radio in 2005 to produce

radio stations, broadcasts, festivals and installations. Commissions

include Hearing in Tongues (2007) for Tate Modern, Mobile Radio BSP

(2012) for the 30th Bienal of São Paulo, and Render (2017) for

documenta14. In 2016 she co-curated the Radio Revolten festival in


Knut Aufermann is a radio artist, musician and organiser. From

2002–2005 he was the station manager of Resonance FM in London.

Together with Sarah Washington he runs the project Mobile Radio,

investigating alternative means of radio production. Their works have

been broadcast on more than 50 radio stations across the globe as well

as in gallery contexts e.g. at the 30th São Paulo Biennial and

documenta 14. Knut Aufermann plays improvised electronic music, solo

and in groups, using various forms of audible feedback.
